The Supreme Audit Institution of Curaçao (Supreme Audit Institution) had the satisfaction of having the visit of Lousewies van der Laan, Director of the Netherlands Transparency International (TI-NL) and also Michael Hernandez, President of Fundashon Kòrsou Transparente (FKT). Lousewies was on the island in connection with the breakfast seminar of Fundashon Kòrsou “Integrity in Governance; A prerequisite for sustainable growth in Curaçao. She was the Keynote Speaker for the seminar. FKT had organized this in the framework of the annual United Nations International Anti-Corruption Day of December 9. The visit
During the visit, there was first an introductory interview with the Board Members, the Acting Secretary and another Sector Leader of the Supreme Audit Institution, Lousewies gave an introduction on the organization and the activities of the TI-NL, also as department of the Transparency International (the International non-Governmental Organization (NGO) for combating corruption). It was also discussed with Michael in general what the possibilities and challenges are in order to come to a department of TI on the island. Eithel Vriend, the President of the Board of the Supreme Audit Institution, put forward the important role that Courts of Audit play in the field of integrity and the prevention and combating of corruption. Also the importance of the cooperation with organizations that have the combating of corruption as their objective.
After this, Lousewies also gave a presentation for all the Staff of the Supreme Audit Institution. She emphasized the crucial role that the Supreme Audit Institution, among others also the High Council of the State (Ombudsman and Advisory Council) and the watchdogs of democracy, such as TI-NL have jointly, for monitoring the functioning of the Government. Lousewies spoke furthermore, among other things, of the importance of the “Tone at the Top”, encouraging speaking up, and improving the protection of bell ringers. These are all essential elements of an integrity and secure reporting culture.
